What is Acton Academy?
Acton Academy of Washington, DC is a Montessori preschool and innovative elementary school that guides each child on a journey to discover a calling and change the world.
Acton Academy is opening for the first time this September in Foggy Bottom with Acton Montessori (ages 2.5-6) and Acton Elementary (grades 1-5), so this is an opportunity to be an integral part of the building of an innovative, game-changing school.
Acton Montessori is an all-day program (8am-6pm) with an optional five-week summer session for those families who want an all-day, all-year option.
Acton Academy of Washington, DC is an independent affiliate of Acton Academy, founded in 2009 in Austin, Texas. The Acton network includes dozens of “learner-driven” schools across the United States and around the world.
In collaboration with the lead Montessori primary teacher, the apprentice Montessori teacher will help build out a brand new, all-day primary classroom in a lovely historic row house. She/he will then assist in guiding 12-18 children in our inaugural year, delivering an exceptional all-day program that supports the individual needs of the children in accordance with Maria Montessori's philosophy and vision. Consistent with that vision, the apprentice Montessori teacher will observe, track, and evaluate individual children’s progress. Additionally, she/he will work with the Acton elementary teacher to help provide a smooth transition for children into the older Acton elementary classroom. The position offers opportunities for growth into a full-time position, professional development, and advancement.
We are looking for someone with a deep curiosity about life, a lifelong love of learning, and an entrepreneurial spirit (must thrive in a startup environment). She/he will be responsible for facilitating a nurturing and joyful studio culture. We seek someone who has:
- Montessori training (ideal but not required).
- Experience working with children (ages 2.5-6 preferred).
- An entrepreneurial mindset and desire to experiment, evaluate, and improve on everything she/he does.
- A willingness to be coached and mentored.
- A passion for the Montessori philosophy and the discipline to embody Montessori values at all times.
- A deep respect for all children and empathy for the challenges children face in their lives.
- A commitment to practicing gentle, compassionate limit setting.
- A strong teamwork ethic, a genuine desire to collaborate with colleagues, and a steadfast sense of professionalism.
- A willingness to work in a year-round program (with the ability to take vacation time during the year).
